about

It was believed in the medieval period that chanting could create a connection to the divine and provide an atmosphere for listeners to connect deeply with their innermost self. These melodies, originally written anonymously, have been arranged, harmonized, and reimagined to create this album. This work aims to present these timeless melodies in a new light free from their historical context and modernized into ambient soundscapes, while retaining their original meditative intention. To convey the otherworldly yet distinctly human atmosphere, this album features the double bass, an instrument whose large resonance and deep soulful tones are particularly effective at evoking these mystical chants.

Each piece begins with solo bass or bass choir, as if the bass were calling out to the source of all creation to bring down its energy and transport the listener to a space beyond time. As the chant slows to a glacial pace, becoming almost drone-like, it is accompanied by enormous clouds of atmospheric reverb, reharmonizing and recontextualizing the chant into an ambient soundscape. Finally, the opening bass chant returns, as an echo from far away, bringing the listener back to reality with the sense that the music will continue to resonate throughout the universe and within their own being.

This album was created with the intention of aiding meditation and providing a unique listening experience. Throughout, the listener is given space to be present with themselves: evocative yet unobtrusive, unhurried yet powerful, the music allows the listener to explore their inner selves while being transported by the soundscape. This self-produced album was mixed and mastered by Kyle Miller, and creative input and inspiration was provided by Tom Armstrong.
